NPR’s The Austin 100: the Best 100 from SXSW (South by Southwest, for thee uncool, lol)

March 14, 2012

NPR’s Stephen Thompson has as good a pulse on quality music as I’ve heard, in my opinion (errr — so sorry Kurt Loder, lol). He doesn’t pidgeonhole his measure of what’s good by his favorite genre — in fact, he doesn’t seem to have a favorite genre — exactly the point. Not that jazz, hip hop, or rock ‘specialty’ critics, or veejays, whatever are shallow — just that I appreciate people who like and know good music no matter the genre. Because it’s good. Good is good. Deeeep.

It was merely a few years back that relatively unknowns like Adele, Bon Iver, and Mumford and Sons were part of the festival, and Thompson’s Austin 100.

So, here’s the ‘good’ music guru’s top 100 bands, out of the roughly 2,000 that play during the four day festival. There’s a link on the link I’m posting below, the NPR article, where you can actually download 71 songs in one file. Pretty sweet, eh — or should I say shweeet!

Try the group “Chic Gamine,” too. Heard them on All Things Considered (which I just learned is ATC for the coool NPR peeps), Weekend Edition with Guy Raz. Good Canadian band.

Rock on.
